When it comes to a clogged and unpleasant-looking shower head, the unattractive look is not the only thing to worry about. Don’t worry, we have a simple home remedy to fix this annoying problem.
As you know, a clogged shower head can also cause health problems. Besides, it’s annoying to shower with a plugged or weak water flow. Our professional cleaners at Interworld Cleaning will show you how to clean it with a natural solution. Let’s begin!
What causes the shower head to get clogged and dirty?
There are minerals and microorganisms in water that can lead you to this unpleasant issue. No matter how clean you are as a person, this would happen, and if you live in a hard water region, this can occur commonly.

Limescale
This is a common result of hard water. When water evaporates or heats, it leaves a hard, chalky deposit around the shower nozzles. It can be white or gray. Water with minerals like calcium and magnesium causes these crusty build-ups.
It reduces the efficiency of your shower head, but the build-up is not harmful to your body.
Soap Scum
This forms when soap mixes with hard water. The minerals react with the soap and create a sticky film on your shower head. It may look white or match the color of your shampoo.
Black Moulds
This is a fungus that grows in moisture, so your shower head is a perfect place if it’s not cleaned often.
If you see these dark spots, clean them quickly because they can cause allergies or even asthma.

Pink Moulds
Pink mould is actually a bacterium called Serratia Marcescens. It grows in warm, moist places and feeds on soap residue.
It can cause urinary infections or skin problems, and although it’s not as dangerous as black mould, it can be risky for people with weak immune systems.
How to descale a shower head?
After reading the causes, you may wonder what the solution is. It’s simple — clean your shower head with vinegar. This method is fast, natural, and easy.
You can choose one of the methods below, based on whether you want to remove the shower head or not.

How to Clean Your Shower Head without removing it?
This is the easiest method. You only need a plastic bag and white vinegar.
Pour vinegar into the bag, tie it around the shower head, and let it soak.
If your shower head is gold, brass, or nickel, soak for less than 30 minutes. If not, leave it for a few hours or overnight.
After removing the bag, run hot water for 1–2 minutes. You can also scrub with a toothbrush, then dry it with a cloth.
How to Clean Your Shower Head with Vinegar by detaching it?
This gives a deeper clean and better disinfection.
You need a bucket or bowl, cloth, toothbrush, and white vinegar. Remove the shower head and soak it in the vinegar. Don’t lose the rubber washers. Cover the pipe with a cloth.
Again, if your shower head is nickel, gold, or brass, don’t soak more than 30 minutes. If not, overnight is fine.
After soaking, rinse with hot water, scrub with the toothbrush, rinse again, then reattach. Run hot water again to remove inside dirt. Dry and polish with a cloth to prevent water marks.
How often should you clean your shower head?
It depends on your water quality. In most cases, once a month is good. If your water is not very hard, every three months should be enough.
Regular cleaning helps prevent mould and mineral build-up and keeps water flowing smoothly.

Why is vinegar better than using other chemicals?
Cleaning with vinegar is a safe choice because it does not contain harsh chemicals. Unlike some cleaners that may cause irritation, white vinegar is natural and gentle.
It also has antimicrobial properties that help kill germs and prevent microorganisms from growing inside your shower head.
